James Peterson, EdD, MHS, a research scientist with the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, has more than 22 years of professional experience in the areas of public health and human services, encompassing various types of health research, administration/management, clinical supervision, community-based research, teaching and training, direct counseling, consultation, and direct work with and research of prisoners, HIV+ individuals, and substance users. He has significant ethnographic experience conducting fieldwork, using social research, strategies to gain access to hard-to-reach populations, applying a variety of qualitative research methods including types of street and institutional interviewing, observations, focus groups, etc. He is experienced in the administration and development of research projects including the design and implementation of research protocols and program policies, adherence to protocols, staff hiring, supervision and management, and research reporting.

Since 1998, he has been the Research Ethnographer/Program Coordinator at a Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health Management & Policy study. From 1991 to 1997, he was Research Associate/Associate Director at the Cultural Systems Analysis Group (CuSAG) of University of Maryland, Anthropology Department. He has conducted extensive research in the area of substance abuse, including working as a substance abuse counselor in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Dr. Peterson is currently the ethnographer working with high risk heterosexual populations in Washington, D.C. on the CDC-funded NHBS study. Dr. Peterson holds a Doctorate of Urban Education Leadership from Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD, and a Master of Human Services Degree from Lincoln University, Lincoln, PA.
